Make Your Own Cup and Can Coolers

You should be able to find thin sheets of craft foam at any craft store or even in the craft or notions section of other favorite stores. It is inexpensive and easy to work with. You can use different colors to create incredibly simple yet cute cup and can coolers.

This is a good project for kids to make during parties or picnics. Their drinks will not only stay colder longer, but they can also personalize their coolers to help them keep track of their drinks. No more wasted half-full cans of soda!

Items needed:

  • Craft foam
  • Velcro strips or dots with adhesive backing
  • Hole punch
  • String or twine
  • Felt
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Embellishments

Directions:

Wrap craft foam around a can or cup. Mark the length and width you need (make the marked area the inside).

Remove backing from Velcro and attach to each end. Press firmly to make sure it sticks. Fold the foam around a can and secure Velcro to keep it in place. Make different sizes for various cups and bottles or make coolers for juice boxes. Decorate as desired.

*You can glue on large snaps instead of Velcro

To make more decorative options…

Cut the foam core as directed above. Punch holes randomly all over the foam or create a pattern or design. Glue a piece of felt (in a contrasting color) to the foam so it shows through the holes you punched. Punch holes evenly up and down each end. Thread a piece of twine through the holes criss-crossing like you would to lace up a shoe. Tie a bow near the top. Decorate as desired.

Make extra fancy can coolers by adding beaded trim or lace. Cut out shapes from different colors of craft foam and glue onto can coolers. Cut out stars, stripes, hearts, circles, letters, or anything else you wish to decorate your can cooler.
