If you are on a fixed income, but you still want your home to look festive during the holiday season, then consider making your own Christmas decorations. Doing so will help you save money, avoid chaotic shopping malls, and allow you to exercise your creative side.
Fortunately, you don’t have to be a craft queen to piece together stunning seasonal decorations. There a thousands of simple projects that can be made with just a few materials and little if any skill. For example, last year my five-year-old helped me make a sensational centerpiece for our dining room table. All we did was get two large pillar candles; one green and one red. We placed the candles on the table and surrounded each with several pine branches, pinecones and berries.
Another simple, yet festive centerpiece can be made with silk flowers. Simply select a nice basket and place a Styrofoam ball or floral oasis in it. Make sure the ball or oasis fits snugly in the basket. Next, arrange poinsettia leaves, berry sticks, and other red and white flowers in the basket, cutting the stems to appropriate lengths to create a sensational centerpiece. Finally, to hide the Styrofoam ball or floral oasis, place pieces of glitter polyester fiberfill around the base of the arrangement.
If you are looking for frugal ways to add to the festivities, then consider making Santa light bulb ornaments. The simple craft project doesn’t have to hang from the tree; rather you can use it to decorate a mantle or add it to a centerpiece. To make, simply gather up a few used light bulbs. Next, mix up some plaster or Paris and coat each bulb. About halfway up the stem, create a beard. Allow the plaster to set, and then paint on Santa’s face, hat and suit. You can further embellish the ornament by adding a pom-pom at the end of Santa’s hat or gluing on sequins for Santa’s buttons.
