Did you have a potholder loom when you were a child? You know the ones… they were wood or plastic, depending on your age. They were square with little tabs sticking up and you placed stretchy loops around the tabs then wove more loops over and under.
I had one and it was great fun to make all kinds of potholders and drink coasters for family and friends, and bibs and things for dolls and stuffed animals. Well, those looms are still around and you can get one at Spin Blessing along with the loops (you can also pick them up at most Wal-Mart stores).
Today, there are also larger and elaborate designs but whatever style you choose your kids will have fun with it. They will probably have even more fun if they make and use their own weaving looms.
Wooden Weaving Loom
To make a loom like the ones we had as kids, you will need four 9″ pieces of craft wood about 1″ thick. Attach them to form the shape of a square, gluing the corners together with wood glue. Mom or Dad should help little ones secure corners with finish nails. Paint or stain if desired.
Next, measure and mark out spots for tabs, keeping an equal distance between marks. Help your kids tap upholstery tacks into each marked space with a light duty hammer. Upholstery tacks are recommended rather than nails, because they have rounded heads. Nail heads may scratch little fingers when weaving.
Super Simple Weaving Loom
Here’s a really simple version of the weaving loom that you and your kids can make from a square of craft foam. The size is up to you. Help kids measure and mark spacing. Mom or Dad should then cut small slits along the top and bottom and both sides of the craft foam. Let kids decorate as desired then begin weaving!
*You don’t have to stick with just loops either. Try ribbon, yarn, and thin strips of fabric for different looks.
