Making the Most of Holiday Travel

If you are planning to hit the highway to visit grandma this holiday weekend, expect a lot of company. According to AAA, you’ll be joined by nearly 92 million other Americans traveling more than 50 miles away from home for Christmas or New Year’s.

For those taking to the skies in the next couple of days, you’ll be joined by more than 5 million fellow passengers, according to AAA. If you think that’s a lot of people to be sharing elbow space with, consider that the number reflects a 9.7% decline from a year ago. AAA says this year’s air travel volume is the seventh lowest in the past ten years.

All the Christmas travel chaos has not stopped hotels from cashing in on families looking for a place to plop their weary bodies on something other than grandma’s air mattress. In fact, some properties have come up with clever ways to attract holiday travelers, especially the ones who put off Christmas gift shopping to the last minute.

Embassy Suites Boston-Logan Airport hotel, as well as the Fontainebleau Miami Beach, is offering a complimentary gift-wrapping service through Christmas Day. If you dread the chore of wrapping presents, or you simply don’t want to pay extra for gift paper and bags, and then be forced to decorate your holiday goodies in a cramped hotel room, this is an option you should not pass up. Embassy Suites will wrap up to three gifts with festive paper, and top them with ribbon and a bow for free. Meanwhile, the Fontainebleau will wrap up items at no cost if you purchase them from the hotel shops.

If you are traveling to Chicago’s Hotel 71 boutique hotel inquire about its “Ribbons and Bows” holiday shopping package. For just $209 per night you get a plush room, a $50 Visa gift card redeemable at one of the dozens of stores located along Michigan Avenue or State Street, plus complimentary gift wrapping.
