Missing the Office Potluck

There are so many marvelous advantages to running the home-based business–from flexibility and income potential to personal development. But, there are some things that just can’t be done when one is running her own business all by her lonesome in her bedroom or basement—one is the fun and socialization of the office or workplace potluck.

Not everyone loves a good office potluck, of course, so being on your own might be a very good thing. You are spared having to come up with the right dish or transport it to work and hope no one gets food poisoning or hates your cooking—or you don’t have to stop off at the supermarket for the obligatory bag of chips or deli salad. And, still others might not miss having to be the one coordinating the potluck or sending around reminder notices for coworkers to be sure take home their dirty dishes.

But, for others of us, the socialization and food variety of the office potluck or summer picnic may have been one of the highlights of the work year for us—a chance to show off our culinary skills or see what other people might bring, a break from having to pack the peanut butter sandwich or find some place nearby for the quick take-out lunch. After all, when you work from home, you often find yourself rummaging in the fridge for last night’s supper leftovers and a little of the unexpected that comes with an office potluck might be a nice change of events. I don’t know if office potlucks are a relatively modern development or not—but in my work world since becoming an adult in the mid-eighties, they have definitely been one of the things I associated with the more traditional job. And, sometimes, when I am staring in my fridge at home wondering what to have for lunch, I feel a little pang of nostalgia for the office potluck.
