Mission Possible: The Doldrums

It has been awhile since I’ve posted a Mission Possible post so I figured it was high time I give an update and a motivational pep talk.

Since the beginning of Mission Possible, I have changed my eating habits and my exercising habits:

I started eating breakfast.

I started including 5 to 8 servings of fruits or vegetables in my diet.

I am making sure I’m drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day.

I am not drinking soda–not even diet soda.

I am exercising at least 48 minutes per day.

I’ve dropped about 5 pounds. And then I’ve hit a plateau. The dreaded plateau where losing that elusive extra pound seems impossible. So I part of the reason I haven’t written a Mission Possible blog recently is I have nothing new to share. And then it hit me that that’s exactly what I should share: nothing new.

There are several reasons why we hit plateaus. In my case, I think I will have to keep exercising until I have more muscles to burn more calories. I am clearly not at my ideal weight yet. I think sometimes we hit plateaus because we get a little lax. We need to step up our exercising or lay off the goodies. And sometimes we hit plateaus because our weight loss goals were unrealistic and we’re really not going to lose more weight.

But my point in sharing this today is to encourage to keep on keeping on. This is exactly why the whole goal cannot be a reward from the scale. Real weight loss doesn’t necessarily happen that way. While it is true that if you are obese, you need to lose weight for your health. . .you can still focus on the important habits you’re building rather than on the weight loss.

Really, if you think about it, are all of those changes I listed about unhealthy? Of course not. Those are becoming the building blocks of my new healthier lifestyle. The weight loss will come as will the inches and smaller dress sizes as long as I keep on keeping on.

So don’t give up. Be persistent in what you’re doing. Your body will thank you and you’ll feel better!
