My daughter has entered a new phase of her life in the last few weeks. Gone are the days of sitting in one place, there is a whole new world for her to explore. The transition from immobile to mobile began when my daughter started to insist on laying on the floor. She did not want to be held and she did not want to sit in any kind of chair. At first she was perfectly content to grab on to her toes and put them into her mouth. With several colorful toys in her reach, she started kicking in excitement when given a toy and would become very frustrated when she lost the toy or could no longer reach it. With her excitement and frustration she would roll over from her tummy to her back resulting in shock and surprise. She did not quite know what had happened and she could not roll over at will. Eventually her interest in all the different and interesting things around her motivated her to move and she learned how to roll from her tummy to her back whenever she pleased. She started demanding to be on the floor more often. She enjoyed the freedom and the ability to look at things from a different perspective. Her floor time also gave her easier access to her brother and his toys. He would show her how to build towers and she would try to grasp it. At this point she was still struggling to keep objects in her grasp and would drop things after only a few seconds. However, she was getting lots of practice and before long she was able to hold onto smaller objects with ease while rolling from her tummy to her back. In a matter of days, thanks to all her hard work toning her muscles, she mastered the skill of rolling from her tummy to her back and from her back to her tummy …
