Mom Robs Bank for Kids

Well, something like that.

How many times have you considered robbing a bank in order to score some fast cash? Most of us joke about committing the federal offense at some time or another, especially during tough economic times. Of course, a joke is just that; something to laugh about.

I’m sure most people don’t actually make serious plans to carry out the risky and illegal job. That goes double for parents. After all, parents are supposed to be role models for their kids and what kind of example are you setting if you are rotting in a jail cell after humiliating your kid by getting caught stealing a bag full of Benjamins?

But then there are parents like Erica Anderson, who make headlines for bucking the trend.

According to news reports, the 37-year-old mother, who apparently was so desperate for cash, took matters into her own hands last week when she strolled into an Oregon bank and demanded money.

But, here’s the reason Anderson is all over the TV these days. According to local police, Anderson not only requested cash, she also instructed the teller to wait 15 minutes before calling law enforcement or else “two kids wouldn’t make it home from school.”

All of these demands were written in a note that was passed to the teller, so the mom didn’t have to speak a word.

Initially Anderson’s plan worked. Police say she fled the bank with $1,300 thanks in large part to her 19-year-old accomplice who drove the getaway car at lighting fast speeds.

Fearing that a couple of children were in danger, police didn’t follow Anderson’s getaway car. Fortunately, an astute witness jotted down the car’s license plates, and eventually Anderson was caught.

Police nabbed the bank robbing mama outside her home shortly after she picked her kids up from school. News reports state that Anderson was arrested in her driveway while her daughters were sucking down ice cream bars that were reportedly bought with the stolen money.

There is so much wrong with this scenario, I don’t even know where to start. I will mention that police say the mom was “very concerned” about what might happen to her daughters following her arrest. Though, one cop at the scene told reporters, “I guess if she was really all that concerned about their welfare, she probably wouldn’t be committing bank robbery.”

So let the jokes fly. I’ll start: My mommy robbed a bank and all I got was a lousy ice cream bar.
