Momma’s on a Diet: Secret Weapon 1

Being on a diet requires secret weapons. The aces you keep up your sleeve that help you to keep on track on the days when the “nibblies” strike and threaten to kill your pound loss resolve. My number one secret weapon isn’t what you’d usually associate with weight loss, but it works for me so I thought I’d share.

As far back as I can remember I’ve loved beetroot. I’m not sure what you call it in the US, beets perhaps? It’s a root vegetable, that’s purple in color. You boil it in its skin then the skin just rubs off. Once cooked you can either pickle it or eat it as is. Usually it’s sliced (unless the beetroots are small in which case they are used whole as baby beetroots) and put in a jar with pickling vinegar. From what I understand from others, people seem to either love it or loathe it. I’m definitely in the first category – boiled or pickled I don’t care, if it’s beetroot it’s OK with me.

I always knew I loved it, I didn’t realize how much however until I was pregnant with my first child and one afternoon whilst watching Oprah I realized I was sitting with a jar of pickled beetroot and a fork eating it straight from the jar! Whilst it made me wonder a little at pregnancy cravings, I was at least pleased it was something I wouldn’t be embarrassed to confess to my diabetes controller!

Years later, and waging a war against the excess pounds I’m carrying, beetroot is coming to my rescue. Although I love many vegetables, I often don’t have the time or energy to actually cook them, and I’m not someone who enjoys raw vegetables, so beetroot is my friend! Although it’s not something I’d add to a pot roast type dinner, there are plenty of ways to eat it – and it even gets a tick on my daily fruit/vegetable intake without costing me any of my precious Weight Watchers point allowance!

So bring on the “nibblies”, my purple secret weapon is at the ready!
