Monkey See, Monkey Do

dishesChildren who see an action performed or a virtue emulated are more likely to repeat that action or cultivate that virtue. If they see certain skills performed, they’ll pick up on those skills more quickly. Children who spend time with adults learn how to function in an adult world, and children who are taught at home and spend all day with a parent will understand how to be a parent all day themselves.

Often, husbands and children don’t understand everything that the mom does all day long. But when they have a day off or a day home sick, and watch her scamper all over the house all day, their appreciation kicks it up a notch. It’s the same thing when a child is taught at home—they might not realize it as suddenly, because they’ve always seen their mom working hard, but they will understand and appreciate all that goes into it. The same is, of course, true if the dad is the stay-at-home, homeschooling parent.

Seeing this hard work and dedication will make a big impact on your child’s life. They may choose to send their own children to public school, and that’s their choice—I’m not talking about raising generations of homeschoolers (although, let’s be honest, that would be kinda cool). I’m talking about raising generations of people who have seen first-hand, on a daily, consistent basis, what goes into making a home run, keeping a family together, and participating on a daily basis in the running of that home. This can all be made part of the homeschool experience, and can enrich the family in many ways, from an increase of gratitude to more of a willingness to pitch in when it’s needed.

Hooray for parents everywhere, be they public school or home school, working or stay at home, who set good examples for their children to follow. Hooray, and keep up the good work.
