More Picture-Perfect Prom Photos

left

There’s more to prom than just pretty dresses, tuxedos and a fleet of limos.

There’s also the fancy updos, half-dos and do-overs.

Oh, and the flowers.

For girls, a corsage can make or break a prom ensemble. However, despite its significance, it’s rare that floral arrangements worn on a giddy girl’s wrist receive the documentation they deserve.

When taking photos on prom night, don’t overlook defining details such as corsages and boutonnieres. If you are planning to preserve memories of prom in a scrapbook you’ll want to snap every aspect of the occasion. In order to retell the story about one of the most memorable nights in a student’s high school career you will need a variety of different images. Snap shots of your daughter and her pals getting their hair done, nails painted and dresses steamed. Pay special attention to details, such as shoes, jewelry, cuff links, or a single lock of hair. Those little nuances help complete the big picture. Once you’re done snapping details, you can turn your attention to capturing the nervous moments that take place right before your child’s date arrives.

Remember, the key to taking memorable prom photos is to capture emotion. A group of prom-goers with smiles plastered on their faces doesn’t scream, “Fun!” To document genuine expression, aim for candid shots. Focus on interactions between the excited teens, from hugging and high-fives to cheek touching and hand holding. If you are taking group shots, consider spicing it up a bit by encouraging your subjects to make silly faces or strike funny poses. When you are done capturing the traditional couple shots, feel free to document these lighter moments, so that you have an array of pictures to remember the night.

If you aren’t confident in your photography skills, consider hiring a professional. By doing so, not only will you avoid feeling the pressure of capturing the momentous occasion, but you will also be able to get in some of the shots, so you have stunning snaps of you and your formally dressed child.
