More Than Just a Dance

Yesterday in Your First Dance & YouTube I expressed my surprise at the idea of making a spectacle of yourself at your wedding by spending so much money and time to perform a first dance that is reminiscent of the Thriller video and more. I mentioned to my husband when he got home from work and let me tell you what I love about my husband, I can tell him something like this with my skeptical face on and he can turn it around for me.

What a Great Way to Work Together

My thought when I first heard this story was a sort of slack-jawed amazement, but my husband’s expression was more of delighted joy. Have I mentioned how much I love this part of him? He can make just about anything, sound fun and attractive. When I pointed out he would never have done something like that, do you know what he said?

He might have done it if we were going to do something quite so fun that would create a memory we could look back on for years to come. In fact, as he described it – it sounded somewhat enchanting.

Think about it, you’re spending all this time together with your friends and each other and you’re working together to achieve a goal and no matter how simple it may seem, it’s working together, actively and it’s creating a fantastic memory, together and even if the marriage doesn’t work out – even if they end up discovering they make better friends than they do spouses – they will always have that memory ..

Learning Together, Sharing Together, Building Together

Yes, putting together a first dance that’s a spectacle may seem to be showing off or looking to grab fifteen minutes of fame, but that’s only if you look at it from the outside. If you turn the situation around and look at it from the point of view of the groom and the bride, they are committing themselves to creating something together.

It takes a lot of wherewithal to get passed the idea of putting on a show for your family and friends. It also takes a great deal of commitment to meet week after week, month after month to prepare a dance and this all in and around the wedding planning.

From his perspective, I can see the fun in it. I can also see how it’s a way to learn how to work together for a goal, no matter how small it may seem to everyone else. So consider my opinion revised or at least amended.

What song would you and your spouse like to have done a showy first dance to if you had the opportunity now?
