More Tips for Reducing Test Anixety

Test anxiety is real. Test anxiety is a major concern for many students and parents. In my last article, I discussed some of the signs of test anxiety. I also offered some tips on how to help your child reduce text anxiety. In this article, I will offer even more advice and tips on how to reduce anxiety before taking a test.

In addition to the tips in my previous article, try the following.

Make sure that your child gets enough sleep. Energy is needed to focus clearly on the test questions. It is recommended for children to have at least eight to ten hours of sleep a night.

Help your child study but do not add extra pressure the night before the test. Give your child a break from the books and do something fun with the family. Allow your child to unwind by playing a game or watching a movie. Try not to dwell on the fact that your child ahs a test the next day. If your child begins worrying the night before, he/she will not sleep well.

Make sure that your child gets a good breakfast the morning of the test. Try to wake up early enough so that you can avoid a morning rush and have a calm positive morning environment.

Give your child words of confidence before he/she goes off to school. Use comments such as, “You know the material, you will do great.” “You will ace this test.” Remind your child that all you ask is that he/she does the best that he/she can.

Encourage your child to talk with the teacher about any concerns on the test. It may help for students can discuss their test anxiety with teachers. If your child is confusing about a question, make sure that he/she knows he/she can ask the teacher.
