Mothers Day, a Celebration or a Trial?

Mothers Day can be lovely or it can be a time of pain. For those with good relationships, it’s a chance to get together and celebrate. For those estranged from family or whose mother has died or they live a distance away, it can be a time of misery and loneliness.

Yesterday, Mothers Day here, for me was a lovely family day. Our daughter and her husband were unable to come down to us. That’s the way it is when your daughter is married to someone in ministry and Mothers Day falls on a Sunday. Sunday for them is a day or church services, so she asked if we’d like to go up there for lunch. Mick and I were happy to do that.

On the way up, Mick and I listened to a sermon from our minister about relationships. It was very practical and helpful and one I’m sure we’ll listen to more than once. The rest of the time, we chatted and listened to 60s music Mick transposed from our records and CDs, and made into a mixed CD. On long car trip we like to have one CD without having to fiddle about changing CDs. He knows I like to have songs I can sing along too. He gets around 200 songs on one CD.

It was lovely to have lunch cooked for me. Our daughter used one of my recipes which she often makes for friends and gets told what a good cook she is. You’ll find the recipe for beef and mushroom pie here. She had the pie cooking and when her husband came home, he set about making the mashed potato, always his domain, while she did snow peas, broccoli and corn. I wasn’t allowed to help.

We spent a tranquil lunch on the terrace of their unit among the tree tops. During lunch I heard from our son with his Mothers Day wishes and news. Then I received a beautiful hand made card and my gift, two gorgeous mugs and a journal. My husband and family all know how I love pretty books to write in.

It was a relaxed afternoon, spending time together talking and catching up on the news and events with her and her husband, before he had to leave again for the first of two evening services.

One the way home we heard a radio program of Elvis songs. Elvis is still one of my favorites. Sadly we ended up out of the station’s range before the program finished but we kept it longer than expected before it cut out. So yes, I had happy Mothers Day thanks to my husband who was happy to drive up to Sydney and family who made it a special day.
