Movie Review – “Eight Below”

Finally a movie you will enjoy as much as your kids.

“Eight Below” is the story of eight sled dogs who are separated from their trainer, and forced to live alone bracing the Antarctic winter.

This Disney movie is rated PG, and trust me, there is not one moment in the movie where I felt like I would have had to cover my children’s eyes, or explain something they shouldn’t yet understand. It’s heart-warming, tear jerking and triumphant all rolled into one.

I’ve taken issue with Disney ever since Bambi’s mom died, and Dumbo’s mom got shackled up in a cart. I’ve never understood why a kid movie had to be super sad or even violent in some cases. While there are very sad moments in “Eight Below”, it’s not like the others. The problem with the other movies I mentioned is that the mother is always ripped away from her child somehow, but in “Eight Below”, that doesn’t happen.

On top of a great story line, the scenery is beautiful, there are funny lines throughout, and the movie really reels you in to get to know and love all the characters. The dogs are amazing and beautiful to boot, and even somebody like me, who never really was a “dog person” wanted to run out and find a huskie to adopt. The way they all loved and cared about eachother was a lesson we could all use.

Take your older kids (5 and up) to see this movie. You will all enjoy it, and just one word of caution: There is one part during the scene with the beached whale that you should maybe prepare yourself for, especially if you have little kids. I won’t say what it is, but if you want to know, send me a message and I’ll fill you in.
