Nestled in the Ozark Mountains of North Central Arkansas, off U.S. 63, is the “Natural State’s” largest spring. Mammoth Spring, a quaint and charming town dotted with historical buildings and storefronts, goes hand in hand with the park it is named for and makes exploring the history of the area an adventure. The park lies adjacent to the Missouri State Line, and is easily accessible from the highway.
Mammoth Spring State Park is also a National Natural Landmark, and it is a wondrous place. Perfect for relaxing with family and friends, or all by yourself, this park features nature at its finest. With no signs or fences to obstruct the view, you can get up close and personal with nature as we did. We found it not only beautiful, but a tranquil sanctuary. We relaxed and enjoyed the surroundings and each other, but that is not to say it wasn’t exciting. Quite the contrary!
We watched beavers as they scurried around collecting material and building dams. We fed the animals, and took pictures. We were able to get very close to the animals. They seemed to pose for the camera, as if to say, “I’m ready for my close up.”
Go ahead and toss some seeds or breadcrumbs to the many geese and ducks as they frolic along the shore. Pay attention to the curious birds and squirrels scampering nearby, waiting to see if you drop a few scraps from your picnic lunch. Don’t forget the turtles, the fish, or the rabbits either.
We noticed signs that warned that while nature is beautiful it can also be dangerous, so take care as you explore the park. Wildlife is not fenced in but allowed to enjoy its natural habitat. By employing respect for nature, you can safely enjoy it.
A path circles the spring and we walked around it to observe it from all sides. We also visited what remains of the hydroelectric power plant and felt the spray on our faces as millions of gallons of water crashed over the dam (pictured above). You can enjoy tours, or simply take a great hike.
