It is hard to resist a good cereal box. With the cost of cereal being so high, it is natural to want to do something with that box. Well, there are actually several ways you can reuse a cereal box.
My family are cereal monsters. Despite my many attempts to break us of this expensive habit by serving homemade pancakes, muffins, eggs, etc., we always go back to cereal. I do my best to get the lowest prices, from combining sales and coupons, to shopping at the warehouse stores, buying boxes bigger than my kids.
So I am very familiar with the cereal box.
After we have removed any box tops for our school, we are still left with a lot of material. This is material that would normally end up in the landfill. Not a good thing. Every time we throw something away, in one form or another, we are usually wasting money.
Does anyone remember the garbage barge that floated back and forth between New Jersey and New York a few years ago? No one wanted to claim it, so it just kept floating along the river from one end to the other. I wonder how many cereal boxes were on that barge.
Anyway, here are some ideas for reusing cereal boxes.
My son is the first to claim an empty cereal box for his frugal building kit. He uses the boxes to make machines and other crafts.
A really nice idea for cereal boxes is to turn them into magazine holders (racks). Remove the top of the box and a little bit off of the sides (a nice diagonal cut works the best). Cover the boxes with pretty scrap book paper or fabric scraps to match your decor. Not only does this reuse cereal boxes, but it keeps you organized.
Cereal boxes come with those wax paper bags or liners that hold the cereal. These bags can be used pretty much as a wax paper substitute. You can rinse out the bags and use them to keep snacks, such as crackers or cookies from going stale. I buy huge bags of stuffing mix that I use in many meals, such as meat loaf, to extend the food. The cereal bags are perfect for keeping the stuffing mix fresh after opening it. Or, you can cut the bags open and use them to wrap food for your freezer.
