Now I’m Scared

As a parent, what scares you more?

A. Having your child flunk out of school

B. Having your child imprisoned for criminal behavior

C. Having your child get sucked into a life of drug use

D. Having your child get regular bikini waxes to please her boyfriend

Up until a few days ago some of my greatest nightmares involved A, B, and C. Then, I received the following comment on a blog entitled: “Would You Allow Your Teen Daughter to Get a Bikini Wax?” and I was forced to add “D” to my list:

“From a teens point of view, I’d just like to point out that most girls in high school don’t get bikini waxes just for swimming anymore: They get them for sexual reasons, ie, “boys like it better”. Therefore, if I had a daughter, I wouldn’t let her get one and then I’d have a serious talk about boundaries.”

Consider it a wake-up call by sledgehammer.

And here I thought I was a pretty savvy parent. Granted, my daughter is still in kindergarten and has never uttered the words “bikini” and “wax” in the same sentence, but still…

It’s been three days since I first read the teen’s comment and I still find myself thinking about it… while I’m driving, making dinner, folding laundry, and especially when I am playing with my innocent, pure, virginal daughter, whose life currently revolves around plastic Littlest Pet Shop toys and her favorite Blendy Pens, which she uses to draw puppies, rainbows, fields of flowers and the occasional happy face cloud.

growing into a teen, who saves up her babysitting money to splurge on a bikini wax for her boyfriend, is beyond frightening to me.

Obviously, my plan is to keep her bikini, boyfriend and wax-free until she’s 30, okay, 18, but how realistic is that goal?

The aforementioned blog comment has me wondering, revaluating and worrying more than ever.

My dream of having my daughter evolve into an intelligent, loving, self-assured, chaste young woman is tainted by nightmares that she will succumb to worldly temptations, the least of which is getting a bikini wax job for some oversexed teenage boyfriend.

Even more petrifying is the fact that I wouldn’t know that she was subjecting herself to the pain of having her pubic hair ripped from her nether regions to please some boy with raging hormones.

Now I’m scared.
