Nursing Back to Health

After spending two days whimpering in pain, fever, and sickness with his Dad my son got what he really needed: Mom. I’ve said before that my wife does everything but it’s really true. A major skill my wife possesses that I do not is the ability to nurse our son. It’s not only about nourishment though. My son is significantly more calm and relaxed when he is with his mother. During the two days he was with me he was constantly looking around. He’d look to the sofa, look in the bed, look in the kitchen and the bathroom too. He was looking for his mother around every corner. It was great to be with Dad but he really needed Mom. So, on the morning we took him to the doctor and my wife decided to stay home, my son was already starting to get, look, and feel better.

Somehow the ability to be in his mothers arms literally made him better. He wasn’t worried. He didn’t whimper. He didn’t cry. After a marathon round of nursing and a little nap he didn’t even need to be held. He happily sat on the ground an played with a toy duck. He shook the duck and the bells inside the animals large feet rung loudly. He laughed. He giggled. He smiled. Even more encouraging, my son began to crawl around and seek out new adventures in the house. He found the floor lamp, the screen door, and the wireless computer keyboard. He hurled himself down a hallway in search of Mom’s big exercise ball. Occasionally he looked up, made sure his mother was still there, and smiled before returning to his fun time playing.

My wife, quite literally, improved my son’s health. While I’m somewhat jealous of my wife’s magical healing abilities I couldn’t be more pleased with the result. Our son, who was sick for a lengthy period of time, is well again. What’s not to love?
