Off-to-College Scrapbook

Tens of thousands of college coeds head back to school this weekend and my neighbor’s granddaughter is one of them. Kara is beginning her freshman year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and in addition to hauling bedding, clothing and school supplies, she’ll be taking an extra- special item with her as she begins her foray to higher education.

My neighbor just put the finishing touches on an Off-to-College-themed scrapbook filled with photos of Kara’s family members and friends. The memory album’s pages also include unique embellishments and special mementos that complement the photos taken at milestone events. To make the scrapbook even more personal, Kara’s grandma added inspirational quotes to each page.

The famous phrases are taken from a variety of sources, including books, songs and speeches. Some layouts feature a single quote while others contain a dozen or so pieced together as a page border. Some are funny while others tug at the heartstrings. My neighbor says her goal was to find words to keep Kara motivated while she was away from home.

Some of the inspirational quotes used in the book include:

“A man who has never gone to school may steal from a freight car; but if he has a university education, he may steal the whole railroad.”–Theodore Roosevelt

“The most beautiful discovery true friends make is that they can grow separately without growing apart.”–Elisabeth Foley

“Education is the power to think clearly, the power to act well in the world’s work, and the power to appreciate life.”–Brigham Young

“Do not follow where the path may lead. Go, instead, where there is no path and leave a trail.”–Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.”–Henry David Thoreau

“The horizon leans forward, offering you space to place new steps of change.”–Maya Angelou

“You cannot help but learn more as you take the world into your hands. Take it up reverently, for it is an old piece of clay, with millions of thumbprints on it.”–John Updike
