I always knew that the road from diapers to the potty might be a little rough, but I did not expect anything like this. We have switched from disposable diapers to disposable training pants, and have been using disposable training pants for a couple of months now. Dylan has been getting better and better about using the potty, and now most of the messy stuff makes it into the potty. On the liquid side of things, he’s getting about fifty percent in the potty and the other fifty percent in the training pants.
One morning about a week and a half ago, I went to change Dylan’s training pants and discovered that his poor little bottom was bright red and blistered. I thought that it was strange that he had a diaper rash because he has never really had one before. As I changed him and applied some of the rash cream that we keep in the closet just in case (thank goodness), I started wondering what had caused the rash.
Dietary changes can cause diaper rashes, but he has been eating the same things that he’s been eating all along. He has also not been going too long between changes, as he either uses the potty or tells me shortly after he has wet or soiled the training pants. One thing that did change was that we bought a package of a brand of training pants that we had not used in a while. I am beginning to think that perhaps he has developed a sensitivity to them, and possibly to disposable training pants in general.
Fortunately, I have a few cloth diapers that still fit Dylan. We had tried to get into cloth diapering, but I was unable to purchase enough diapers to make a complete switch so we stopped using them after a few weeks. I am glad that I did not get rid of them, because the rash has improved since I stopped using the disposable training pants a couple of days ago. I am hoping that switching over to cloth will help the rash to heal completely and prevent it from returning.
