Oh Those Last Days of Summer–5 Things To Do With Your Kids

Though the temperatures are scorching in much of the United States, summer is officially winding down for millions of school kids around the nation. Some have already started back to school, while many start next week.

If you’re like most parents, you didn’t accomplish your summer “to-do” list, which likely included things like family outings and fun. I’m one of those moms. This week, I’ve been cramming in a summer full of activities with my kids. I sure wish I’d done this more earlier in the season, but I never claimed perfection, and I do the best I can. Here are some ideas of fun things to do with your kids:

1. Make playdough. So simple to make, this gives kids and parents the chance to do something together, get their hands dirty, and even throw in a little science with the measurements.

2. Go swimming. Take your kids to the pool. If there isn’t one nearby, try a fun sprinkler. Or, to really get into the action, why not fill up some water balloons and have a go? Or get out the hose and make your own, homemade sprinkler. Any way you do it, water play can be a blast! Just make sure to follow all safety precautions and to never leave your children alone around water.

3. Try some arts and crafts. Remember macaroni necklaces? They’re inexpensive and easy to make. Or what about coloring your own underworld sea? I’ve got one posted on my dining room wall right now. The kids love it. They used glitter and markers and had a ball. Sock puppets are another great idea. The kids can color on the faces, or, if you’re craft savvy, pick up a few stick-on eyeballs and perhaps some fake hair and help them by adhering things with a glue gun. Then let them put on a puppet show for you.

4. Tell stories. No, I don’t mean from books. This time, let them use their imagination. Try this—start a story based on a character your child likes. Get the story going in your own words then let them finish it. I’ve had some wonderful stories go around in my house by doing this. Plus, it allows the kids to use their imaginations, and gives you a little insight into their thought process.

5. Play with them. No brainer, right? Well, not exactly. How many times have your kids asked you to pleeeeeeeease play with them? How many times have you been too busy? Take a day and just do it. Get down on the floor and play with your kids. They’ll be happy and you’ll feel like a kid again.

Whatever you decide to do, here’s to hoping your last days of summer are memorable and enjoyable. The years go by too fast—enjoy them.
