On Turning Three

My little lady turns three today, at 12:14 PM (Eastern Standard Time) to be specific. It has been a remarkable three years. We have seen so much together (Florida, Maine, North Carolina, New York, Rhode Island and France) and shared a countless array of hilarious moments. So what amazing activities do we have planned for her big day? Well, nothing really. Sitting around the house, coloring, baking a chocolate cake (with white icing) and general silliness. And for her party tomorrow? Immediate family, two close friends, pizza, soft pretzels and selections of hot hors d’oeuvres and fruit. Wow, we are boring people! No, not exactly, or not usually, but the birthday party trend for us has been low-key affairs at our home with no more than 25 people (adults + kids). We like to fancy ourselves somewhat of traditionalists when it comes to such events and have taken a certain sense of pride in hosting the parties at our humble abode and preparing the food and cake ourselves. In an age of over-the-top grandeur for toddler and bigger kid celebrations, we probably stick out like sore-thumbs.

This kind of party can be really fun, and historically has been for our gang. The kids spend a few hours playing with our toys, running around the backyard (weather-permitting, but it doesn’t look promising this year!) and generally having a good, old-fashion time – the kind of party that folks had before there were Chuck-E-Cheese’s, Bounce University, or MTV’s obscene Sweet Sixteen Parties.

This year, we came very close to upgrading to, what could be considered, a more extravagant party. Justin Roberts, one of our favorite musical acts, is playing in Philadelphia tomorrow morning and we toyed with the idea of reserving a big table and letting the World Café Live venue play host to our clan – celebrating in style with great live family-friendly music. We opted out of that situation when we learned that Justin’s full band, a big part of his sound and his charm, would not be backing him up for this show.

So we prepare for a fun, modest gathering all the while praying for some serious sun over the next 24 hours to dry up the snowy, soggy ground.

Happy Birthday Kiddo!
