Organization Tips for the Freelance Writer

I have been working as a freelance writer for over two years now. My work is a web content writer and a professional blogger. Along the way I have learned several ways to stay organized that I would like to share.

I use a file folder system which enables me to locate what I need quickly. One of those folders is labeled “Work Receipts.” Anytime I purchase something that is used for my work (computer paper, pens, books, etc.) I put the receipt in this folder.

If I purchase several items and only a couple of them are related to my work, I highlight those. As soon as I get home, those receipts are immediately placed in my folder. So when it is time for taxes, everything is in one spot.

If your freelance work involves receiving assignments, you can also use a file folder system. In the past I had folders labeled Monday through Sunday and inside I would place the assignments I needed to do on particular days.

I have now switched over my filing system to where my folders are labeled 1-31, for the days of the month. I put my assignments in the folder corresponding to the date I need to work on them.

Speaking of assignments, with my job I am given a week to complete them. So when I receive my work, I take a look at what is ahead and plan out which days I will do each assignment.

I also put together a calendar each month for the blog topics I write for. I know how many blogs must be written for each topic and so I spread them out over the month.

Freelance work can come in waves. You can’t always plan for what you will receive but you can be prepared by having an organizational system in place.
