Organizing Your Closets

One of the most difficult places to organize an any home is the closet. Closets are generally very confined spaces that offer very little in the way of organizational variety. You will not generally be able to expand the closet dimensions beyond what they presently are and it is difficult to convert your closet into anything other than a closet.

No matter what size your closet is or how many items of clothing you have, there are some tried and true tips that you can use to help you get a better grasp of how to arrange your clothes. Here are some of those tips, but e sure to shop around at your local home improvement and room decorating stores for answers that suit your needs. If you are truly desperate for some on-sight supervision and advice, you can even hire the services of a professional organizer to help you get your closet in maximum functioning condition.

First, before you move ay further, clean your closet out. It is impossible to organize a dirty closet. Cleaning your closet not only involves dusting and insuring that your space is clean and healthy to breath in, but it also involves throwing away all of the items that are merely taking up space.

Everyone has old clothes, shoes and accessories that they have not worn in the past year at all. If some of these used goods are in your closet, then take the next step to throw them away or give them to good will. In general, the rule is that if you have not worn an item of clothing for the past year, you will most likely not wear it in the coming year either. Get rid of it.

If you are in need to extra cash (maybe to help buy your closet storage units) you can even sell the goods in your closet that you do not use. For many people, selling used closet goods feels more rewarding than simply giving them away for no personal profit. Remember though, giving items away to charity will count as a tax deduction when you are ready to file your income tax. Your friends will probably also like the gifts.

Next, there are some essential to-dos when it comes to organizing your closet – no matter what size it is. First, install a floor shoe rack. This will be a simple two or three storey rack onto which you will place your shoes – new and old.

Next install a two-tiered hanging system. Many people do not take full advantage of the space in their closets because they simply do not hang clothes up in a manner than helps them get the most out of their space. Instead, the use a single tiered hanger and have a lot of unused space to deal with.

Also, install and shoe or storage rack on the door. These racks do not have to hold your shoes exclusively – they can also hold makeup, wallets, belts and other fun and frequently-used accessories. Maximizing all of your space, including your door and your floor, will help to ensure that you have a continuingly healthy relationship with your closet – even if it is small and disorderly.
