Organizing Your Spices

I used to keep all my spices stacked in a cabinet. Needless to say it was difficult to find what I needed.

Then one day I decided to clean out that cabinet and discovered I had purchased sometimes six of the same spice, simply because I didn’t know I already had it. There were lots of duplicates and some spices I didn’t realize I had.

So my next strategy was to move the spices to a lower cabinet, which has a lazy Susan. I figured swiveling my spices around would make them easier to locate.

But once again, I decided one day to clean out my spices and discovered duplicates, or sometimes several of the same spice. Clearly this strategy wasn’t working.

The lazy Susan was really the easiest way to access my spices but the problem was that because it is a lower cabinet, I have to look down on my spices. So I only see the tops of the containers. The name of the spice is found on the side, so I can’t see what I am looking for.

So one Saturday I spent a good hour working on a new plan that has finally solved my spice problem. The spices that have black tops; I wrote what it was on a label, sticking it on top. And those that don’t have black tops, I used a permanent marker and wrote directly on that.

Now all I have to do is glance down and I can easily see which spice I am grabbing. No more duplicates for me.

There are other ways you can organize your spices. I know they make spice organizers that can sit on your counter or inside a cabinet. So there are lots of systems out there that can help you conquer your spice bottles.

But another suggestion I have is with the spices you use most frequently. Purchase small plastic containers to store larger amounts of the spices you use most often. I prefer these plastic containers over the small bottles.
