While cardstock and patterned paper are essential for any memory album, they are not created equally. The former is typically thicker and features a solid color or pattern on both sides. Meanwhile, the latter is usually thin and decorated exclusively on one side.

In addition, the paper is also decorated on both sides instead of having a plain white back. This is something to consider, especially if you are accustomed to running your scrapbook paper through an ink jet printer. Some basic printers don’t handle cardstock well and you could be out a lot of money if you force the paper through.
Then, there’s white core cardstock. This type of scrapbook paper is generally reserved for sanding and distressing. Another popular trend in scrapbook paper is textured cardstock. The heavy-weight paper features a linen or canvas texture. While this type of textured cardstock is very durable and quite sophisticated, it is also very hard to get rubber stamps to show up on it.
Finally, with the holidays fast approaching, many scrapbook fans may be tempted to purchase metallic cardstock to add pizzazz to page designs. This type of paper is available in gold, silver, and copper, and is a great alternative to using metal embellishments.
