Parents Against Daylight Savings

I highly doubt that I am the founding member of the PADS club. However, I am one of the most outspoken.

Parents Against Daylight Savings (PADS) doesn’t discriminate when it comes to membership. If you have a child, who refuses to go to sleep because “it’s STILL light out, Mommy!!!!,” then you have a friend in us.

“Us” being myself and my core group of playgroup moms, all who have children ranging in age from 6 months to 6 years old… and all who are forced to deal with the barrage of bedtime complaints, moans and groans that are triggered when we spring ahead an hour each year.

Daylight Savings Time… bah-humbug!

It’s bad enough that parents are robbed of 60 precious minutes of sleep, but to add insult to injury, we are made to cope with the cacophony of whines that commence when bedtime rolls around an hour earlier… and it’s not pitch black dark outside.

“It’s not bedtime yet,” my precocious preschooler informed me at 7 p.m.

“Sure, it is,” I responded steering my little tyke away from the window.

“Why do I have to go to bed when it’s still light out?” my daughter pressed.

“Looks pretty dark to me,” I replied while grabbing for her Hello Kitty clock to show her that it in fact read 7-0-0… her designated bedtime.

Her response: “Mommy, you need to put on your glasses.”

I know for a fact that similar exchanges took place around the world Sunday night (and probably Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night too). While I despise winter more than anyone, I take consolation in the fact that the season’s shorter days, mean an abbreviated bedtime routine. When the sun dips below the horizon at 4:30 p.m. there’s no question that by the time the clock strikes 7 baths are over, teeth are brushed, and my daughter’s pajama-ed body is tucked snuggly in her bed… minus the daylight drama.

What has bedtime been like in your home since Sunday?
