Paying for College

If you need to pay for college and have not saved enough money to cover your expenses you do have other options available to you. It is important to consider all of your options and choose wisely. The choice you make can affect your financial future.

1) You can apply for grants through the government. In the United States you just need to go to www.fafsa.org or you can visit the financial aid office at your school to pick up a paper application. The application only takes a few minutes to fill out, as long as you have all the information already gathered together. You will need your tax returns, your parents returns if you are under twenty-four and your school’s information. When applying for grants it is important to realize that not everyone qualifies for grants, and so you should be considering other options as well.

2) You should apply for as many scholarships as you can. You can apply through your college for both need based and academic based scholarships. You can also purchase books, which list scholarships, or look online for scholarships. There are a lot of scholarships available, and many have just a few applications each year. It is worth the time to fill out the applications.

3) You can work part-time while attending school. This can be difficult, and it may take you longer to finish, but you can avoid accumulating debt while doing this. Many companies will pay for you to get your degree if you get a degree in the same field. You could work as a nursing assistant while getting your nursing degree. If you work for a business company they may pay for you to get your degree in business.

4) You may consider taking out student loans to cover your tuition. This is a decision that you should not enter into lightly. As you take out the loans you need to consider the earning potential you will have after you graduate. If you plan on being a teacher you should take out a lot less than someone who is going to be a doctor should. You should only borrow money for necessary expenses, and try to live as frugally as possible.
