Pencil Holder for Father’s Day

If your dad is always looking for a pen, now you can help him out. Make him a neat pen and pencil holder for Father’s Day. It’s not hard to make and you will have fun doing it. Make it special by adding things Dad will appreciate.

Start with a an empty can or a large plastic cup. If you are using a can, an adult will need to help you make sure there are no rough spots around the opening. If you’re using a plastic cup, press a little bit of clay into the bottom to give it some weight so it won’t tip over. Use the kind of clay that hardens up. Another option is adding some small stones to the bottom for weight.

Now, begin decorating the pencil holder. Cover the entire outside of the can or cup with paper or fabric. You can use one large piece, or cut lots of small pieces and glue them on randomly. Use wallpaper, wrapping paper, tissue paper, or any light fabric. You can also paint the container instead of covering it if you prefer.

For a cool leather look, tear up pieces of brown paper bags. Dip them in a mixture of two parts white glue and one part water and smooth them onto the container, wiping away any excess glue solution. It’s best to do this over newspaper or a mat to avoid making a mess.

When the covering you applied has had a chance to dry, (it may need to dry overnight) cut out some cool pictures from magazines or make copies of favorite photos. Maybe you’d like to do a combination of both. Also, cut out words like love, Dad, #1, best, from magazines or print them from your computer. Glue these all over the outside of the container and make a special design.

Dad will love it!
