Personalizing Your Outdoor Living Space

chairs on a porch Do you have an outdoor porch or patio space that you love to enjoy in the spring, summer and fall? What does it look like? This outdoor space often functions as another room of your home, but is it rather plain and generic? Why not personalize it with your own sense of style and make it a welcoming and comfortable space? Here are some ideas.

One of the great assets of our current home, is the large screened porch in the back. On that porch, we can enjoy fragrant spring breezes, cool off in the summer and enjoy fall’s bounty of colors. The sounds are amazing, from cheerful bird call to the rustling of deer to the gentle chimes of our wind chimes.

We spent the first spring and summer basically cleaning up the porch by power washing it. Then we added some furniture. We also added some white stringed dragonfly lights for whimsy and to help us find our way in through the back door at night. Now, this year, we are ready to start giving it a more personal feel.

What do most rooms in a house have that are lacking on a porch or patio? Pictures and decorations on the walls of course. Any pictures, if they are hung in a protected spot, such as against the wall of the house will generally be fine for three seasons. Just bring them back into the main part of the home when the temperature drops. Obviously, you want to keep anything that is paper based away from rain or high humidity.

We have an iron scrollwork votive candle holder that I am looking forward to hanging this season. It is very similar to one that I saw at Pottery Barn for $80, although this one was purchased for $4 at a thrift store. Some thick candles placed on the wooden outdoor table will tie in with the wall decoration nicely, I think.

Check back later today, when I talk about an easy and invented way or personalizing outdoor pillows and why books are the right choice for outdoors.
