Pet Friendly Outings: Bark in the Park

I am a HUGE fan of our local minor league baseball team, the Lakewood BlueClaws. The games are lots of fun, affordable, and just about every seat has a fantastic view. But I especially love their special events — like this weekend’s Bark in the Park.

Bark in the Park is a chance for dog lovers and baseball lovers — or dog loving baseball fans, or baseball loving dog parents, or however you want to count it — to bring their pups out to a game!

This obviously isn’t an event that will be a good fit for every dog. If you are planning to bring your dog to a baseball game like this, they should be up to date on all their vaccinations. Your dog should be in good health AND well socialized.

Keep in mind that a stadium can hold a LOT of people. Strangers are going to want to pet and coo over your lovely pup. Little kids will be running around. The park is noisy and full of weird smells. My Lally would probably not be a very good candidate for a Bark in the Park adventure. She’s too skittish, too nervous around strangers and in strange situations. Moose is more outgoing and would probably love the attention (and all the dropped food).

Part of being a responsible pet owner is knowing how your pet will respond in certain situations — and making sure their responses in public are appropriate and will not hurt or endanger anyone.

If you’re in the central New Jersey area, come check out Bark in the Park this Saturday, May 6th. Game time is 1:05pm. Who knows… your pup may just catch a fly ball or home run!

If you’re not in the area, ask your local baseball team or other sports venue if they have a similar event. If they don’t have one, you could try to get them to start one! You’ll need to find a local pet-friendly sponsor, too. Bark in the Park is sponsored this time around by Camp BowWow, a doggie daycare.
