Pet Projects: Make a Video, Write a Story, Nominate a Hero

Recently I put together a compilation of cool pet and/or animal related sites that people had shared with me. Below is another compilation of sorts, but these tips were not passed on to me by fellow Families.com members. Instead, these are ones I came across at random and thought you, my fellow pet lovers, would enjoy learning about if you haven’t already stumbled across them yourselves.

2007 ASPCA Humane Awards

The ASPCA wants to know who your heroes are –both human and animal.

Know a cat or dog who performed a heroic act? What about a law enforcement officer or firefighter who went above and beyond the call of duty to rescue or protect an animal in distress? Or even a kid 14 years or younger who stepped up to make a difference in an animal’s life?

Those are the five categories the ASPCA is currently accepting nomination submissions for. Every year they hold their Humane Awards to recognize “extraordinary animals and animal lovers who have furthered animal welfare in the United States.” Winners become guests of honor at the Humane Awards Luncheon in the Big Apple.

The deadline to submit your nominee(s) is fast approaching, though: August 15. Nominations accepted online.

Become a (Home) Moviemaker

The Humane Society of the United States has come up with a clever way to raise awareness and let you express your feelings about animal fighting. Michael Vick certainly brought this issue into the national forum, and animal rights groups are capitalizing on that to make as much of a difference as they can.

Like with the HSUS’s contest. Contestants make a video in “response to Hulk Hogan’s body slam of animal fighting” and then post it on YouTube.

You can refer to recent dogfighting news, but they want the videos to remain focused on the animals they’re trying to help. That doesn’t mean they want images of dogs in the act of fighting. Far from it.

So get creative…and also get cracking. The deadline for this one is fast approaching too: August 20. For more info and to enter online go to Knock Out Animal Fighting Video Contest.

American Kennel Club Fiction Contest

If expressing your creativity via paper and pen rather than video camera is more up your alley, the American Kennel Club’s 22nd Annual Fiction Writing Contest might be more to your liking. They’re limited to 2,000 words or less and can be about any subject but they must feature an AKC-registrable breed or a breed from the Miscellaneous Class.

Entries must be submitted via snail mail. You’ve got some time for this one. The deadline’s January 31, 2008.
