The Abilene Zoo, located in Nelson Park holds a collection of animals and plants that are native to Texas. There is a Discovery Center, Hyena Exhibit, and Black Bear Exhibit. The Zoo offers educational programs, tours, and special events. Visit this museum when studying animals, biology, and botany in addition to doing just for fun.
The Grace Museum is three museums in one. You will find the Grace Hotel (The Art Museum), The History Museum, and The Children’s Museum! as well. Go to The Grace Museum to learn about the cultural life of Abilene and the West Texas region through its permanent collections, special exhibits, classes, seminars and special events. Visit this museum to learn more about the culture of Abilene and to explore art with your children.
The Abilene Texas & Pacific Railroad Station is across the street from the Grace museum. It serves as the convention and Visitors bureau. This is a must-see missions-revival style building that represents the best of the foreign frontier. This is an impressive 55,000 square foot missions revival building. A good time to visit the Texas and Pacific Railroad Station is when you are studying architecture and westward expansion.
Frontier Texas!, located in downtown Abilene, is a 14,000 square-foot facility on 6.4 acres and allows visitors to relive the Old West with the help of state-of-the-art technology. Visitors use technology to experience attacks by Indians and wolves, stampeding buffalo, and more. This is history immersion at its best.
The National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature collaborates with award-winning artists to produce exhibitions of their artwork that are distinctive, appealing to museum visitors of all ages, and of the highest quality. In addition to this unique artistic partnership, following its debut at the NCCIL gallery each exhibition travels to museums, public libraries, and galleries nationwide.
The National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature has many opportunities for the homeschooling family. Students can meet visiting artists, enjoy free family art activities every Saturday, enjoy docent led tours, and participate in annual summer art camps. This is a great place to help your child develop their artistic side.
