Planning Your Baby’s First Birthday: The Outfit

I had a lot of fun designing a fun t-shirt for my son to wear to his first birthday party. I have also seen some really creative options available from artists on Etsy. What your child wears to her first birthday party is almost as important as the cake she is going to smash her hands into.

A first birthday party outfit should only meet two requirements: it should be comfortable and it should be cute. Bonus points if it is washable and stain resistant. After that, it is all up to you. Here are some ideas to get you started:

1. Match the outfit to the theme. I have seen some really cute outfits that were perfectly matched to the party theme. For example, a friend of mine had custom cow print dresses made for her daughter’s farm themed birthday party. It was adorable! The dresses featured red ribbon accents and were truly unique and beautiful.

2. Personalize the outfit by adding your child’s name and a big, colorful number one. I have seen this done with iron on transfers, patchwork and embroidery. I have also seen the design duplicated onto a bib for the birthday boy or girl to wear during their first encounter with birthday cake!

3. Add accessories! Add personality to your baby’s outfit with a special hat, bow, or pair of shoes. This is another item that you might find from a custom seller on a site like Etsy or at a local children’s boutique. Accessories make great props for your baby’s first birthday photos, too.

4. Get two outfits if you can’t pick just one. Babies always need a change of clothes, anyway, so you might as well make both extra cute for the birthday party. One outfit can be worn before the meal, and the other can be worn after cake. That way your baby will look fresh for opening her presents.
