Politics 101: Focus on Barack Obama

barack obamaWe are continuing today with our focus on Barack Obama and his major running platforms. I feel like I would be remiss if I didn’t point something out that I find very interesting about his campaign. He takes suggestions. Yep, you read that right. Barack Obama takes suggestions. If you go to his website, in numerous places you’ll see a links that say things like, “Let Your Voice Be Heard” or “Present your ideas.” I am sure some would argue that these are actually fielded by junior campaign staffers and/or that he never reads them, etc. I am not venturing to guess on that one. But his campaign has been essentially built around him presenting himself as a “back to a government for the people by the people” kind of guy. The idea permeates throughout his various platforms and is an important aspect of his overall campaign.

Yesterday, we talked at length about Barack Obama’s civil rights platforms and various things that he saw as inequities in our society. Today, we’ll cover more of his running platforms.

Americans with Disabilities–Barack Obama supports and wants the United States to become a signatory to the UN’s Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and he will also expect the Senate to ratify it.

Economy–Obama proposes a “Making Work Pay” tax cut that will provide $500 in individual tax relief and $1000 in tax relief for working families.

Simplify the Tax Code–Obama proposes that the IRS use the information it already gets from banks and employers to send middle class Americans, a pre-filled out tax return that you can just sign and send back. Experts estimate that this will save Americans some $2 billion in tax preparation fees.

NAFTA–Obama believes that NAFTA’s potential was oversold to the American people and that revising it is in the best interest of the American worker. He will work with Canada and Mexico to make NAFTA more beneficial to the American people.
