Pop Culture Updates: New Name, New Show, and a New Life

You waited, you wondered, you might have even ventured a guess or two. Well, now the wait is finally over. Oscar-winner Halle Berry just revealed the name of her newborn daughter… Nahla Ariela Aubry.

Nahla… say it with me… GNAW-lah. Yes, it’s pronounced very similar to the name of Simba’s gal pal, Nala, in Disney’s popular 1994 animated feature film The Lion King. Nala means, “gift” in Swahili. But Nahla means honeybee in Arabic.

The infant was born Sunday morning and is the first child for the actress and her model boyfriend, Gabriel Aubry.

The Academy Award-winner told TV’s “Access Hollywood” that she and Aubry didn’t pick out the name until right before they left the hospital.

“For us it was hard to name the most important person in our life until we met her,” the 41-year-old first time mom said.

NEW SHOW

Besides Berry another one of Oprah Winfrey’s BFFs is making headlines today.

Actress Kirstie Alley has reportedly signed a deal with Winfrey’s Harpo Productions to develop television projects — which could include her own daily talk show.

“Kirstie is a tremendous talent who is incredibly relatable and a true fan favorite,” the president of Harpo Productions said in a statement.

The 57-year-old actress, who recently stepped down from her role as reigning queen of Jenny Craig also announced she plans to launch her own weight-loss company to include a line of foods and fitness programs.

Frankly, I didn’t know Alley and the Big O were such great pals. I remember Alley made headlines when she famously modeled a bikini on Oprah’s show after losing 75 pounds, but I didn’t think it would inspire a TV deal.

A NEW LIFE

Finally, remember Jennifer Wilbanks?

She’s the woman who earned the nickname the “Runaway Bride” when she ditched her fiancé four days before they were to exchange vows and later confessed that she faked her own kidnapping.

That was three years ago and now Wilbanks’ ex-fiancé, John Mason, is a married man.

Only he wised up and didn’t tie the knot with Wilbanks.

Mason married Shelley Martin in a quiet ceremony in front of their families at his parents’ home in Georgia last Saturday, according to news reports.

I think it is safe to assume Wilbanks was not a guest.
