Potty Training Our Son Part XII

After our grocery store adventures and visiting grandma and grandpa diaper free, we successfully reached another milestone of potty training. Our son continued to use the potty with relative ease for the rest of the week (he still required assistance wiping after a poop). He only had two accidents during the course of the whole week and woke up most mornings with a dry diaper (another hurdle to be conquered in the near future). We seemed to be well on our way to long term potty training success.
Week three of potty train started out quite well. He was using the potty all by himself easily getting his underwear and pants down and up all by himself. He continued to be satisfied with his reward of chocolates for using the potty and often requests the “big chocolate” meaning he wants a bigger piece. Occasionally, he would use the bathroom several times in a hour because he wanted chocolate (something we will have to wean him from eventually). Towards the middle of the week he started asking for gum (I buy the all natural gum made with xylitol in cinnamon). Initially,I thought that this was an acceptable trade off but it started to become problematic when he used the potty during a meal (it is rather difficult to eat food while chewing gum) or when he decided to pee four times in thirty five minutes. Aside from a few reward issues, our son continued to use the potty like a champ both at home and while we were out running errands or visiting family.

With week four came and interesting shift. While our son continued to use the potty without issue at home and on outings, he decided that he was “too little” to pull up his underwear and pants by himself …

(To be continued …)
