Prepare Yourself for General Conference

I love listening to General Conference. It is a time when we are given counsel and commandments that will help us to live happier, healthier and more successful lives. The prophet and apostles speak directly to us, addressing the needs of our time. I love to learn what they have to say and to apply it my life. With that in mind, there are times when I feel that I have gained more from General Conference then other times. Of course the difference is really how prepared I am to listen and apply the words and how in tune I am with the spirit. Here are five things you can do to get yourself ready for General Conference.

1) I find that praying for the people, who will speak during General Conference, really makes a difference in my attitude towards General Conference. Usually I begin praying a month or two before General Conference. I pray that the speakers will be inspired in what they say and that my heart will be receptive to the messages that they give.

2) Another thing that really helps is to make a list of areas that I feel that I am struggling in or looking for a greater understanding of a certain principle. As I listen to a talk, I take the time to think about this list and see how what they are teaching applies to any of the areas I am concerned about.

3) I make it a point to stay awake—well at least I really try to. There have been a few times I have dozed off in the Sunday afternoon session. This is a shame because generally it is the best session of General Conference. I have found that taking notes is a great way to help myself stay awake. Also crocheting really helps me as well. This is something that I do not really have to concentrate on, but it keeps me alert so that I can listen to the words that are being spoken.

4) Another thing that helps me get the most out of the conference sessions is to have something for my children to do. Since my children are all five and under, it is best to have a variety of activities available to keep them occupied while I listen. I make sure that they listen to the prophet. As they get older I expect more out of them.

5) I take the time to reread the talks after the session is over. I love that you can read the talks online or in the Ensign. This is the time when I get the most out of the talks, because I can read cross-references, ponder specific passages and pray for further understanding.
