Primary Time: September Theme “Comfort and Courage from the Scriptures”

This month the theme for sharing time is “Comfort and Courage from the Scriptures.” The main scripture story is David and Goliath. The theme points out that David had courage because he trusted that the Lord would take care of him. Other stories which will be shared during the month include Lehi’s dream (focusing on the iron rod) and the story of the Liahona guiding the Nephites to the promised land. These stories illustrate that as you receive guidance from God and do what is right he will be there to guide you.

To reinforce this them at home you may want to retell the scripture stories that the children will be discussing. This is a great time of year to begin reading the scriptures together as a family. You can schedule time around the earlier bedtime for school. If you have children that can read by themselves you may encourage them to read the scriptures themselves everyday. If they struggle with reading the Scripture readers available through the church can help them. These are illustrated, which help to hold the child’s interest as well.

You may want to share examples of how reading the scriptures has brought you comfort through the years. As parents you may want to share a few of your favorite scripture stories with the children. If you have older children you may ask them to share experiences and stories as well. It is important to teach your children the importance of the scriptures.

There is not a new song to learn this month, because the Sacrament program will soon be here. You may want to review the songs with your children. You can find MP3 files of the eight songs at the church’s website. There are two songs, which I was not familiar with, “Holding Hands” by Janice Kapp Perry and “Scripture Power” by Clive Romney. You may want to review these songs with your children as well, since they are not in the “Children’s Songbook.”
