Progressive Cooking Class for Adults

When some of Downtown Disney’s restaurants offered progressive cooking classes for kids in June, I complained a little bit. I loved the idea for children, but I was jealous that adults weren’t given the same opportunity. Well someone must have listened, or more likely, listened to feedback from those who actually attended the classes with their kids last month.

Now, one month after three Downtown Disney restaurants opened their doors to introduce kids to the professional culinary world, those very establishments are doing the same thing for adults. On July 10 Fulton’s Crab House, Wolfgang Puck’s Grand Cafe, and Portobello offer a day of progressive cooking classes for grown-ups.

I said earlier that I felt bad that just about every other post on my blog had something to do with an event going on at Disney World, but I could not pass up the opportunity to announce the progressive cooking classes, given that I asked for them and would absolutely attend if I were in Orlando this weekend.

The Packages Disney web site has the details: for $60 you can spend four hours of your afternoon at Disney touring through three restaurant kitchens and learning tips of the trade from professional chefs. But that’s about where the similarities to the cooking classes for kids end.

One of the criticisms I levied against the kids’ cooking classes were that most of the foods the kids prepared were silly, like candy-based sushi. But there’s no fear of that for the adult cooking classes. Students in these sessions will learn to create some of the participating restaurants’ signature dishes.

From Packages Disney, the menu for the progressive cooking classes:
*Wolfgang Puck Cafe
-Maryland Style Crab Cakes
-Paired with Concerto Grunerveltline
* Fulton’s Crab House
– St. Augustine, Florida Yellowtail Snapper
– En Papillote with Julienne Vegetables, lemon and fresh thyme
– Paired with Fulton’s White Wine
* Portobello
– Panna Cotta with Florida Peaches
– Paired with Oltrepo Pavese Muscato Dolce

As you can see, in addition to learning how to prepare these dishes, students at the classes get to taste the finished products with complementary wine pairings.

Really, I can’t think of a better way to spend a July afternoon at Disney World. Sure, there are tons of things I want to do at the park, but most of those things are around all of the time. If I had the good fortune to be in Orlando this weekend, I’d jump at the opportunity.

The classes run on July 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Obviously space will be limited, so if you’re interested make reservations ASAP by calling 407-828-8996.
