Puppy Party Fun

Happy birthday, Haka!

My neighbor’s dog turned 13 last week and to celebrate she threw him a super soiree that outdid parties I’ve attend for humans. Of course, my neighbor treats her dog like a child—even though he is 91 in human years—so a full-blown pooch party really is not an unexpected move on her part.

She requested that human guests dress up like dogs to make the birthday pup feel loved. My 6-year-old wore a white sweat suit that I decorated with black fabric spots and I wore a store-bought doggie Halloween mask, black pants and a black shirt. I was going to go as Scooby-Doo, but switched to the Black Lab look at the last minute because of its slimming features.

Haka’s party included games like Pin the Tail on the Pup and a bone-eating contest for the kids (who downed bone-shaped graham crackers). Then, there were two fabulous party treats which I had to get the recipes for. The first is a dog-friendly birthday cake and the other is for kids who like to pretend they’re dogs:

PUPPY CAKE

Ingredients:

1/2 pound lean ground beef

3 cups uncooked rolled or quick cooking oats

2 large eggs

1 cup milk

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix together all ingredients in a large bowl.

Press mixture into a greased 8-inch round cake pan.

Bake about 30 minutes, or until browned.

Turn out onto a plate.

When cool, frost with thinned out mashed potatoes.

Pipe decorative edges and garnish with a few dog biscuits.

PUPPY CHOW (treats for humans)

Ingredients:

12-ounce box Crispix cereal

1/2 cup butter

1 cup peanut butter

12-ounce package of chocolate chips

2 cups powdered sugar

Directions:

Combine butter, peanut butter and chocolate chips in a pan and place on the stove.

Heat until mixture is melted and smooth.

Place the cereal in a large bowl and pour the melted mixture over it.

Stir until the cereal is thoroughly coated.

Pour the powdered sugar into a large Ziploc bag.

Add the coated cereal into the powdered sugar and shake until it is well covered with the sugar.

Pour the cereal mixture onto wax paper to cool and dry.

Serve at room temperature.
