Do you want to know what you can do during the holidays to be more environmentally responsible, but you don’t want to slug through a bunch of explanations on why you should or how you should? Take a look at the following simple green living tips that you can practice this Christmas season.
- Recycle your gift wrap.
- Reuse your gift wrap.
- Make your own gift wrap from cloth bags, newspaper or paper bags.
- Buy a locally grown Christmas tree.
- Recycle your cut tree.
- Buy a living tree that can be replanted. You can also rent a living tree. This is so easy to do. Not only will it be delivered and then picked up, the rental will also include food for the tree.
- If you already have an artificial tree, make it last and don’t replace it with another any time soon.
- Carry reusable shopping bags.
- Shop online and have your gifts mailed directly to the recipients.
- Use LED lights instead of incandescent lights.
- Skip the driving around for hours to look at neighborhood Christmas lights and walk or drive once to a local eco-friendly display nearby, such as at an arboretum.
- Don’t toss unwanted gifts. Instead, donate them to a local charity to be put to good use. You can also give them away on Freecycle.org or sell them on Craigslist.org.
- Recycle old batteries.
- Purchase rechargeable batteries.
- Buy toys that run on kid power instead of batteries or electricity.
- Put your Christmas lights on a timer, so you won’t forget to shut them off.
- Keep your electronics for another year before replacing them.
- Recycle your old electronics if you get new ones for gifts.
- Send Christmas e-cards instead of paper Christmas cards.
- Send cards made of recycled paper.
- Buy locally grown food for your Christmas feasting and holiday parties.
