Red Hot Reno Sizzles in the Summer

If you are looking for a sizzling summer event to take the family to this August look no further than Reno, Nevada’s Hot August Nights. The mega-popular hot rod extravaganza is scheduled to take place from August 4-10, and this year it will feature much more than just car cruising.

Families can take part in karaoke contests, sock hops and hula-hoop contests while enjoying live entertainment and the custom care showcases.

The annual event, which spotlights the 1950s and ’60s, is expected to draw 800,000 people this year and will include performances by Davy Jones of The Monkees, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Peter Noone and Herman’s Hermits, and B.J. Thomas.

Also appearing at this summer’s festival is racing legend Mario Andretti, who will be signing autographs at the Texaco tent at the Grand Sierra Resort on August 7th. Hot rod enthusiasts will also have to jockey for a spot in the tent where a team from New Zealand will build a car from the ground up in less than 24 hours. The car will be built using parts purchased at the swap meet at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center. The team’s efforts will be taped for broadcast on Fox Sports Net, and afterwards the car will be taken to Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah for an attempt to set a speed record.

Finally, event organizers say the “super cruise” event that was cancelled last year due to fear of potential violence from non-event participants will take place this year on the loop road at the Grand Sierra Resort.

If you would rather spend part of your summer in Sin City rather than Reno you’ll be happy to know that you can do so without breaking the bank. According to travel experts, hotel rates in Las Vegas are 8% to 11% lower than last year.

VEGAS.com has been offering summer travel deals such as $51.76 a night for two at Circus Circus in late July, including taxes and fees. In addition, the new Palms Place Hotel and Spa next to the Palms Casino Resort, is currently offering spacious rooms for just $139 per night (midweek).
