Reflections of Life

If it’s true that what is on our TV screens and at the movies reflects life, then it is no wonder marriages are in trouble. What I see so often on TV and the movies are people who make decisions based on what they want and who never stop to consider the person they are in a relationship with or how their decision will affect them.

Just recently Mick and I were watching a show where the woman made a decision about her job that was destined to impact on her relationship with her guy. Did she talk it over with him first or ask him what he thought about how it would affect their relationship and the holiday they had talked about? No, she blithely went ahead and took the job and wondered afterwards why he wasn’t pleased.

At the time I said, ‘Half the problems people have would disappear if people actually talked to each other.’

Mick’s comment was, ’Or showed some thought and consideration for the other person, instead of only ever thinking about themselves.’

Yes, I know these are TV shows but sadly I hear too many stories of the same thing happening in real life. Take the man who wanted an expensive overseas trip with his mates for a few days for his bucks’ party and determinedly went ahead with it even though his intended was less than pleased and urged him not to go. Or the woman who went and brought home a dog when her husband doesn’t like dogs. Or another who took a job that would require long hours even though she and her husband were already experiencing difficulties because they didn’t spend enough time together.

In the end it all depends on what is mot important to you. If it is your marriage and relationship, then you will learn to stop and talk things over as a couple and not make decisions only based on what you want but will consider how it will affect the other person.
