Relief Society: Sharewear Activity

One great activity that you may consider for your Relief Society is a sharewear activity. Sharewear is when you gather together items and then people can come and pick up the items for free. This can be done at a ward level or a stake level. It can involve clothes only or it can involve household items as well. This a great way to help those who are less fortunate, as well as pass on items that are still serviceable, but you no longer need.

If you have this activity once a year you should begin collecting donations a month or two in advance. Additionally you will need to spend a day when you sort through everything to put it in the correct sized pile. This will make the day go much more smoothly. You will likely need the entire gym in order to make this work, and if it is a stake event, it may take much more room than that. You can also open up sharewear to the public, as a community outreach event. All the items that are not chosen are then donated to the nearest Goodwill or thrift store.

If this project sounds too daunting to you, you may consider having a monthly email with items that are available to be picked up by others in the ward. To make this work set a date to receive the emails by (at first you may need to send out a monthly reminder) and then send out a message to the people in the ward of what is available to pick up. This really makes the process a lot easier and you do not have to store everything that you have.

Additionally it is important to realize that you can pass on the things that you receive when you are done with them. We received some clothing for our children from a friend, and one article of clothing had to have been from the eighties. The color scheme and the style indicated it. But it was still cute, free of stains and holes and in very usable condition. I know that piece of clothing has been continually passed from one family to another until it ended up at our house, and we will continue to pass it on when we are done having children.
