Review of Stare Junior Game

I am always looking for fun games that our entire family can play. This isn’t always an easy task since my children are ages 6, 4, and 2. The task of finding a game my two-year-old can participate in and my six year old doesn’t think is too babyish can be daunting. I finally thought I had found a fun game our family could enjoy. I turned out to be wrong.

I read all of the reviews about the game before requesting it as a family gift for Christmas from my sister. Since that time it has been played once. That’s right, once. The box says that the game is for children ages 6 to 12. But most of the reviews I read said that they played with younger children who enjoyed looking at the cards and then were just asked simple questions. I figured my family could do that.

The premise of the game sounds great. You look at a card with a picture on it. Then each person takes turns answering questions about the card. Not only did it sound fun, but it I figured it would build memory skills as well. I assumed that the cards would be at least 3×5 and our entire family could look at one card. Then we could ask easier questions to our girls and the questions supplied by the game for my son, husband, and me.

Instead the cards are only 2×2, too small for everyone to look at. The instructions explain that one person chooses a card and looks at it for 30 seconds. Then that person is asked questions about the card. After answering the question the person moves so many spaces on the board. If they answered a one-point question correctly, they move one space, up to six spaces.

The one time we played was a disaster. My girls were too bored waiting for their turn, and my son needed more than thirty seconds to answer any question. Even I did not find the game that interesting and I love testing my memory.

If your family is good at waiting, taking turns, and likes to test their memory then this game is for you. But if not then don’t bother buying it, because it will just sit on the closet shelf like my game does.
