If your preschooler’s room is ready for a makeover, but you don’t know where to begin, then consult with an expert—-your child.
Spend an afternoon with your preschooler placing bedroom items where he or she would like to see them. Work together to place the bed, dresser, toys and other belongings in areas that will work for both of you. By spending time with your preschooler, you can get a good sense of what she values when it comes to design. Perhaps she sees something that you do not. For example, having the bed face the closet can be scary at night for some kids who believe in monsters. By placing the bed near a window you might make your child feel more secure, and thus allow her to sleep better at night.
Have your child visit the fabric store with you. Offer to make pillows, curtains and a bedspread that suit her tastes. You can either make the items yourself or hire a local seamstress. Choosing fabrics will help your preschooler feel as though she has a say in what happens in her room. She will also appreciate the trust that you establish when ask for her input.
Another way to get your kids involved in the room decorating process is to incorporate their designs into the final product. For example, instead of placing all of your child’s masterpieces on the refrigerator, consider framing some and displaying them in her bedroom. You could also opt to add a bulletin board to her room so she can add additional works of art as she creates them.
Preschoolers also enjoy decorating picture frames. Spend an afternoon with your child painting and gluing her favorite items onto frames. Then, fill the frames with your child’s favorite drawings or photos and display them in her bedroom.
