Safe Stickers

Regular readers of this blog know that I’m all about the stickers when it comes to creating memorable scrapbook layouts. It’s true; I am a sucker for theme adhesives that you can buy in bulk and elaborate 3D stickers that are sold in smaller packs. However, for as much as it may seem that I am a stickerholic, who randomly peels and presses at will in an effort to spice up a scrapbook page, I am actually very picky when it comes to the types of adhesives I use on my layouts.

If you are just starting out in the world of scrapbooking, it is vital that you are mindful about the stickers you use on your page designs. Before purchasing stickers to use on your layouts, be sure the package reads: “acid-free,” “pH-neutral” or “photo safe.” You don’t want to compromise the integrity of your photos by using acidic stickers.

Depending on where you purchase your stickers, you might not be able to easily determine their acidity. If you are determined to use adhesives that are not clearly marked as “scrapbook safe,” it’s a good idea to invest in a pH-detection pen. The relatively inexpensive tool can be used multiple times. All you need to do is draw a small line on the back of one of the stickers. A change in color determines the acidity of a sticker and whether or not it is safe to use as part of a page design.

Once your stickers have been tested, then you can use them in a variety of ways to add punch to your pages. For example, larger sticker letters, words and phrases can be used in the page’s title. In addition, you can also purchase stickers that are shaped like picture frames. These easy to use adhesives help secure photos to a page with very little effort on your part. You could also opt to make your own photo frame from individual stickers (such as stars, hearts or happy faces) placed in a pattern around a favorite image.
