Safeway Rally $10 Catalina

Ooh, I love it when they want to give me groceries! Safeway is running a promotion right now. Buy ten of their participating products, receive a $10 Catalina on your next order. (A Catalina is one of those coupons that print out after you pay. They used to be red and white; now they’re just printed on white paper. The company that markets them is Catalina, hence the name.)

One of the best deals I’ve found on this is to combine it with the Cheerios Racing Offer if you haven’t submitted a Racing Rebate yet. Boxes of Cheerios or Honey Nut Cheerios are on sale at Safeway this week for $2.50 per box. That’s $25 for ten boxes. Decent price, right? Make it even better. There are blinkies next to the Cheerios offering 75 cents off two any General Mills cereal. .75×5= $3.75 off. Now it’s $21.25 for ten boxes. You’ll get a $10 Catalina when you buy ten, so the net is $11.25 for ten boxes. Now take the UPCs off and send them in to Cheerios Racing for a $10 gas card. Final net is 13 cents per box (15 if you include the stamp for the Racing card.)

Unfortunately, you can only do the Cheerios Racing card once, but you can do the Catalina deal “one per transaction.” In my store, it means purchase the ten items, receive the Catalina, put the groceries in the car, repeat, repeat, repeat.

The Safeway $10 Rally includes “hundreds” of products. I quickly walked my Safeway and found that most are on very high priced items. However, there are quite a few bargains. You can get the list of items at ShopSafeway.com. You’ll need to register first.

Here are the best bargains for my shopping budget (other than the Cheerios!). Yours, of course, will vary. Remember to take advantage of this as a stockpiling opportunity. Think in terms of how much you’ll need for a year rather than immediately. For instance, after the rally discount, Clorox is only .50. The cheapest I can otherwise find it (according to my price book) is $1.09 on sale. So I’ll be picking up twelve.

  • Ritz and Cheddar 2 packs are available in the refrigerated section for $1.25. Ordinarily I wouldn’t buy that kind of convenience food, but at net 12.5 cents apiece, they’ll make great additions to Paul’s lunch.
  • Nature Valley Granola Bars are another “treat” at $2.33 per box. Anyone know of a coupon source for these to bring the price down further?
  • Pillsbury Crescent Rolls are $2 each for the big tube. I know I have a coupon here somewhere…
  • Tombstone Pizzas are four for $12, meaning the net price is $2 each. These are actually pretty good.
  • If you use Fruit Roll Ups for school lunches, they’re $1.66 before the Catalina. Gushers and Fruit by the Foot, too.
  • Lays are only $2 before the discount.

The list goes on. Unfortunately the promotion doesn’t. You only have until February 27, 2007. Check the list against your coupons and put on your tennis shoes. It’s discount time.
